A Dirty Martini - One4Review

****

A Dirty Martini is a light comedy which puts a smile on the audience’s faces. We are taken back to the 1920’s and the upper class party set. The action takes place in a cabaret bar and the venue of the Zoo cabaret bar effectively creates the right atmosphere.

The characters consist of Elizabeth (Charlotte Blandford), the party organiser, Bertie (James DuBois), the handsome playboy, Harriet (Katie Grace Cooper), a cynical lesbian, and Neville (Joel Cottrell), a hanger on. The action stops and stepping out from behind the bar comes Jonathan Craze as a young Evelyn Waugh. He is attempting to write a novel but is lacking inspiration.

A dance act completes their routine and we are introduced to Gwen (Rosanna Elliott), the lead dancer and a most attractive young woman, especially to Bertie and Harriet. Gwen is overwhelmed with the possibilities of being included in the party set and becoming famous.

How the story unfolds is down to audience choice put to us by the young Evelyn. At various times, the vote is made by waving one of the little coloured flags on the tables. On this occasion, the audience took the story down a dark path.

There are good performances from all the cast. Rosanna Elliott, as Gwen, deserves special mention. Having the lead role, she has to react instantly to the choices made whilst conveying a wide-eyed innocence.
