Here Come the Uglies! – 4****

| On 24, Aug 2014

The bold bright colours in the fringe guide appealed so much to my four year old, that the venue being slightly further than most was quickly dismissed. And for that, I’m glad.

This show is about what happens to the Ugly Sisters after Cinderella’s marriage, and was two panto dames at their campest, silliest and most fun. A small, but keen audience enjoyed the high energy, the singing, dancing, interaction with us, a sing-along, and generally, the full on panto experience, despite the small cast.

Ugly sisters “Fannie” and “Annie” (David Kent and Dereck Walker) seemed like they were enjoying performing, and this was utterly infectious. With bold costumes, and an impressive number of costume changes, there always seemed to be something new happening.

The ending was a little flat, as the script seemed to get them stuck in a corner and then not really resolve anything, but the final finish was the song “beautiful”, which left the audience upbeat, and wondering how the hour went so fast.
