I Am Rhythm is a wonderful exploration of South African music and dance. The origins of South African dance, and its evolution, from prehistoric times up to the present day, are joyfully celebrated in this exuberant show.
The eight dancers sing and dance their way through a series of dances, starting with the discovery of fire in prehistory. Tribal dances and traditional chanted songs evolve seamlessly from ancient Tswana styles to modern Kwasa-Kwasa street dance, introducing warrior Zulu, energetic Gumboot, swinging Pantsula and Sbujwa street-style dances along the way.
This show is full of enthusiasm and infectious joy. It is no mean feat to maintain the level of energy they do for 45 minutes, without missing a beat. The company, After Freedom, employ a deft comic touch, in addition to being talented singers and dancers. The audience all left with smiles on their faces, and a spring in their step.
If the grey Edinburgh weather is getting you down, take the opportunity to bask in the South African sunshine on offer at Dance Base – and smile for the rest of the day!
