Uncanny Valley: Cluny 2, Newcastle, 21st November Three and half stars.

The kids are not merely alright—they’re crafting extraordinary songs.

Uncanny Valley, a five-piece ensemble hailing from Newcastle, exudes the promise of a band far beyond their years. Barely into their twenties and forged through the crucible of music college, they’ve cultivated a loyal following in the North East, steadily earning accolades on the live circuit with headline and support slots alike.

Tonight, supporting the ever-enchanting Dubinski, they command a crowd populated with devoted family, friends, and admirers who have braved the evening chill to witness this rising act. From the opening note of She So Fine, the band’s potential is undeniable. The track delivers a heady blend of Chic-inspired basslines and Red Hot Chili Peppers-esque rhythmic flair, a testament to their formidable musical discipline and the tangible dividends of their educational pursuits.

The set slows with Old Boy and Only a Fool, where Alex, Ben, Josh, Patrick, and Dylan showcase their cohesion as a polished, restrained unit. Here, the Steely Dan and Michael McDonald influences emerge most vividly, particularly in the intricate hooks and their ability to create an effortlessly chilled atmosphere. The audience, clearly attuned to the band’s sonic tapestry, revels in this groove-heavy interlude.

With Take Me Back, the band dips into the annals of musical history, channeling a Mark Knopfler-inspired guitar intro that merges seamlessly with the laid-back energy of a slowed-down Vampire Weekend album track. Vocally, Going Under soars, pairing dreamy dual guitars with funk-infused baselines to stunning effect.

New offerings Jumper and On Your Own continue to weave indie sensibilities with a refreshing originality, hinting at the band’s growing confidence in their craft.

In the grand tapestry of music, age becomes irrelevant when artistry transcends experience. With eyes closed, one could easily mistake Uncanny Valley for seasoned veterans of the stage rather than newcomers finding their stride.

Where they go next who knows, but the current trajectory promises to be as intriguing.

Lads, the student loans are paying off. Count me among your new admirers.
