Amy Annette 4.5**** - One4Review

As audience members walked into the Baby Grand on Monday afternoon, Amy Annette greeted them by the door and welcomed them to the show. Before Busy Body even begins, Amy’s friendly demeanour endears the audience to her, and she only further wins us over during the hour.
Amy explains that the show is ultimately about social labels, beginning this thread with some stories of her childhood which earned her the label of an ‘old soul’, and what adults really mean when they describe kids in this way. She discusses being termed as a ‘fun aunt’ by her friend and what it means to be in her ‘Princess Diana year’ at the age of 36. The hour covers a lot of topics though; we are treated to reflections on her Youtube algorithm, her preferred public toilets, Shakespeare’s sonnets and much more. The material flows well thanks to Amy’s laidback and conversational comedy style. She has such a natural yet distinct delivery, adding a French accent to random words or bursting into song throughout – it is idiosyncrasies such as these which completely charm the audience and make the show feel so intimate and warm.
There is something magnetic about Amy as a performer, she has such an infectious enthusiasm and a charismatic wit which prove her as a comic with a lot to offer. I left the Baby Grand feeling I could listen to countless more hours of her material. As if that’s not enough to buy a ticket for her show, you don’t leave empty-handed either. Amy gifts a souvenir paper fan on the way out which has proved very useful for the humid, airless Fringe venues and only served to increase my gratitude for having spent my hour watching Busy Body!
