Kate Dolan: The Critic 4.5**** - One4Review
one4review | On 13, Aug 2025
We meet Kate Dolan in a room rather like a portakabin, wearing a large
plant pot on her head crowned with what is probably a plastic box bush.
And from that moment, we know exactly where we are – in a world where
absurdity is delivered with such calm sincerity that you begin to wonder
if you are the odd one.
This is alternative comedy laced with voice distortion, restless energy
and a conspiratorial wink to the sleepless, the anxious, and the quietly
peculiar. She riffs on racing thoughts at bedtime, baffling doctor
visits, why anyone would keep their clothes on while being weighed, and
whether all men are secretly meditating.
A banana appears for a hungry-enough audience member. There’s a swift
role-play detour into schoolboy-teacher-husband-wife territory that
escalates gloriously into a Miss Trunchbull transformation before she
retreats, pot first, into her garden centre disguise once more.
After, laughter still ringing and feeling delightfully off-kilter, plant
pots appear for her audience too, for having selfies in the sun.
It has been an absurd hour with Kate Dolan that was warm, strange, and
quietly unifying.
