It has been a few years since I had last seen what used to be an institution for me so full of anticipation I went expecting to be blown away.
The format hasn’t changed, why would it? Four performers sing, dance, gag and generally lampoon the world, often majoring on politics, with short sharp skits, accompanied by an excellent keyboard player. It is a format that has worked for years.
Maybe it was the night, maybe it was the less than full audience, but I have to say I was rather disappointed. I can’t really put my finger on why? It just seemed to lack something.
With all the turmoil and trouble in the world there should be no shortage of material, it should be more difficult as to what to leave out, I got the feeling that it was not quite up to the usual standard and judging by the audience around me I was very much not alone in thinking this.
This is not a bad show, it’s just not of the same pedigree that I have grown to expect from such a normally outstanding troupe.
