Apocalypse Cabaret: Songs from the End of the World is a bold, heartfelt, and darkly funny celebration of performance at the edge of existence. Created and performed by Scout Durwood (she/they)—a cabaret comedian turned writer/director known for their high-octane music and visual storytelling—the show weaves together original songs, pop bangers, Broadway ballads, comedy, clowning, choreography, and burlesque into a rich, 60-minute narrative.
The lights go out, and Durwood makes a striking entrance through the audience with a bottle of wine in a bag, launching a countdown to the end of the world. From the outset, they connect warmly and hilariously with the audience, inviting reflections on regret and survival as the Apocalypse looms.
What follows is the story of a lonely karaoke jockey who finds themselves the last person on Earth, determined to finish that night’s karaoke sign-up sheet. A karaoke screen displays lyrics for audience singalongs, deepening the immersive experience. Their only companion is a puppet—crafted from the wine bag—who becomes a surprisingly poignant conversational partner. Through this dynamic, we learn about a chaotic upbringing and the emotional coping strategies that come with it.
As the performance unfolds, it becomes clear that this surreal karaoke night is a liminal space between life and death. The emotional punch lands when the reason for the character’s presence in this in-between world is revealed—forcing them to grapple with the tension between choosing death and a quiet, reluctant desire to live.
Durwood is a brilliant storyteller, effortlessly blending dark humor with emotional depth. Their singing voice is outstanding, and their natural rapport with the audience is undeniable. If there’s one small critique, it’s that the show’s flow occasionally stutters—likely first-night wrinkles that will smooth out with time.
If you’re looking for something a little different—raw, real, and filled with unexpected joy—Apocalypse Cabaret is well worth your end-of-the-world hour.
