Nina Conti: Who’s Face Is It Anyway? – 5*****

| On 15, Aug 2025

I had the pleasure of experiencing an hour-long masterclass in comedy from Nina Conti. It was, without a doubt, the best show I’ve seen at this year’s Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

Conti opened the show with warm, engaging interaction, highlighting that the performance was based on audience participation—making each show a unique experience for those lucky enough to get a ticket to this sold-out event. It’s no surprise that an extra date has been added.

The show is largely unscripted and showcases Conti’s exceptional skill in improvised comedy. She was joined by her legendary, foul-mouthed sidekick “Monkey,” whose banter was hilariously engaging.

A standout moment came when volunteers were turned into human ventriloquist dummies. A short skit featuring siblings discussing their occupations was eye-wateringly funny.

Audience members were also invited to take part in “Monkey Therapy,” where they sought advice from the simian. Frank, witty responses were delivered, including a memorable exchange with a lawyer discussing employment rights. One member mentioned upcoming celebrations, prompting the audience to join in an impromptu rendition of “Happy Birthday” to Monkey.

The finale was utterly outstanding. Several audience members who had interacted throughout the show were invited back on stage and fitted with masks. Conti’s ability to recall key details from earlier conversations and weave them into a spectacular melee of improvised nonsense was nothing short of brilliant. Her talent for switching between voices while delivering sharp, spontaneous comedy was professionalism at its finest.
