The Court 1 – 4****

This show is a good one for any amateur sleuths out there who wish to test their skills in questioning suspects and solving a murder. The Court centres on the case of two sisters, Mary and Cathy, where one sister is accusing the other of the murder of their elderly mother. Cathy, the accused, is not denying she killed her mother but it is up to the audience on whether this case was murder or manslaughter.

This show was held in the perfect location, Freemasons Hall. The grandeur of the building giving the impression you are in a real court room. This added to the realism of the performance, enhanced by the very skilled actors depicting members of the court. I truly believed they could be real lawyers and court officals! In true court style, this is not a comedy and kept serious until the end. The trial could go either way like a true case and depends on what questions have been asked.

As you enter, you are given the choice to either watch from the public gallery or be part of the jury. The jury is given the opportunity to cross examine each witness and deliver a verdict at the end. No one is made to feel pressure to interact however audience participation is key to making this work. However, if you choose to go into the gallery, you still have an opportunity to ask a question if you have something.

The performance I went to, a few of the jury members took too long to ask their question which meant not many were asked. Additionally, the chosen fore person read out the wrong verdict initially, which was actually quite funny. This show is dependant on people listening and it is interesting to see what others perceive as important or not.

A must see for anyone who wants to try out their detective skills. Failing that, the free pie and pint at the beginning is always a good lure to a show.
