........ And Other Stories  - One4Review

The Durham revue have metamorphosised into the fictitious guardians of fiction and want to tell the audience gathered in front of them the stories which perhaps didn’t make it to publication.  Their vehicle for these ‘other stories’ is a fast paced sketch show which entertains thoroughly for its 60 minute running time. I always worry about sketch shows.  I suppose in a way if you have a bad sketch you can always make up for it by moving quickly along.  However, sometimes the situations can seem a bit forced, as if the punchline has been dreamt up first and the rest of the action shoehorned in around it.  Luckily this certainly isn’t the case here.  Admittedly some sketches work better than others but they are held together by one consistent factor – they all raise a laugh.  From a Mr Men reunion to a Famous Five guaranteed to send Enid Blyton spinning in her grave, each sketch raised a smile on my face.  And for the most part these aren’t the types of sketches where you can see the punchline signposted for miles beforehand.  Some of the biggest laughs came from genuine surprise at the direction the action took.  This is a show which is both amusing and thoroughly unpredictable. The cast are masters at their craft and have a promising future in comedy if this show is anything to go by.  An early afternoon laugh is guaranteed with the quality of these stories.  ****
