Celebration Africa - One4Review

There is a feeling of attending a religious gathering in the songs selected in this show. Josephine Amankwah, looking stunning in African dress, has a strong confident mezzo-soprano singing voice. She is backed by a three piece group with percussionist Alexander Boateng providing the beat with all manner of drum and rhythm instruments. Between the songs, Tetteh Kofi reads from a selection of works by black authors expressing the African experience and not only as an evocation of the continent itself but also in the context of slavery. The most enjoyable pieces were the songs from the African tradition rather than the Christian tradition, especially when the audience were given a small egg shaped percussion instrument to keep time with the music. ***
