Loving Burns - One4Review

Alicia Devine’s play is a successful snapshot of the life of Robert Burns through the words of the women with whom he came into contact. This production is a blend of comedy, monologues and song. Alicia Devine plays the lead role of Jean Armour, his widow, and it’s through her words we receive the most accurate impression of Burns the man, his confidence yet vulnerability and his pre-occupation with writing. She is supported by Patricia Mullen who takes on the roles of the high-born Nancy MacLehose and the bawdy Lizzie Paton, both of whom fell under Burns’ spell. Both actresses work together in comedy routines playing the roles of two disapproving village gossips. By way of complete contrast, Alicia Devine has a beautiful singing voice as she performs a selection of Burns songs. I saw the show a few days after Jeremy Paxman’s ill-judged pronouncements on the quality of Burns’ poetry. All I can say is that this show was totally packed out and most warmly received. This, I think, is some kind of affirmation of a poet whose works have been popular for centuries and are likely to live on for many years in the future.. ****
