The Shadow - One4Review

‘The Shadow’ is a short play adapted Christopher Bennion from the original Hans Christian Anderson tale. The stage is set with a large screen utilised to project shadows on to and other various uses. Together Naomi Hill, Anne Langford and Kathryn McGarr take on the role of storytellers and all the characters in the play. What happens if your shadow gets bored and you just don’t listen to its advice? It may be spirited away, attracted by the hypnotic sounds drifting into your window every evening. Can you live without your shadow? Apparently but what happens when it returns used to being self-sufficient? Will it ever be content to return to its old ways? See ‘The Shadow’ and find out. Cleverly written for the three parts directors Victoria Briggs and Joanna Mackie have worked their way round several points, which could have, been tricky. Designer Tomasin Cuthbert and lighting designer Christopher Swain’s technical assistance add to the illusion. This is an interesting play if a little dark. ***
