The Shadow Within - One4Review

There are times when watching a play that the performance of members of the cast outstrips the quality of play. Nik Drake as David a Catholic priest and Marie Ruane as Jane give sterling performances but the storyline does have a degree of predictability particularly in the second half. The play has two settings, the priest’s study and in the confessional. Jane suddenly walks into David’s study. This is their first meeting for some time. Their past goes back into childhood. They challenge each other’s beliefs and emotions. The action periodically cuts to the confessional which is convincingly lit. A mysterious hooded stranger (Ben Salter) appears quoting scripture which is perplexing to David. As the play moves to its conclusion the connections between the three characters emerge. The play does absorb. It does have an initially good set up but there is an artificiality as it develops. It didn’t quite deliver on its early promise to give a darker and more tense experience.   ***
