Continuous Growth is a brilliant and funny commentary on how the global economy has been driven over the past two decades. It is based on a Finnish play by Esa Leskinen and Sami Keski-Vahala but the characters and situations translate with ease so well to Scotland. After all, Scottish banks and individuals have been at the heart of the speculative growth through the early years of this century and the consequent economic downturn. This might suggest a serious and gloomy play but it is in fact a hilarious comedy.

The central character Andy is played by Billy Mack and he is supported well by Hazel Ann Crawford, Martin Doherty, Simon Macallum and Sarah McCardle who all take on a variety of roles. Andy is an engineer and entrepreneur who has experienced the extremes of bankruptcy and global success. He is ambitious to become even more successful, but his private life has been turbulent and genuine happiness seems elusive.

For the most part, the scenes are fast paced but to catch our breath there are a number of more extended scenes. The direction from Aleksis Meaney gives clarity to the action. This is needed because there is so much happening with many themes being touched on and the style ranging from satire to surrealism.
