Blofeld and Baxter – Memories of Test Match Special

| On 03, Aug 2013

****

At the outset, I should declare that I am a cricket enthusiast and regard Test Match cricket as the pinnacle of team sport. Also, being of advanced years, I have listened to Test Match Special (TMS) for decades. Thus, I did come to this show with much anticipation.

Putting it very simply, both Henry Blofeld (“Blowers”) and Peter Baxter provide a delightful and relaxing hour of reminiscing with anecdotes centred on the legends of TMS. “Blowers” is still a regular commentator and Baxter was the former producer. Those who have been followers of TMS will enjoy the stories of the conversational humour of Brian Johnston; the laser-like wit of John Arlott; the pomposity of EW (Jim) Swanton and much, much more. And yes, we learn something of the background to the famous Ian Botham hit wicket dismissal.

TMS is a cherished part of BBC radio and long may it continue. It is not only the expertise of the cricket description but also the engaging style of the commentators which give it an enduring quality.
