4 stars ****

An Irish folk take on Romeo and Juliet/Aida is how I would describe this.

It’s a very nicely presented story of love between opposing sides during the ‘Troubles’ with the inevitable consequences that intolerance and hate bring. The fight scenes are very well done, no air-punching at all that I could see and very believable kicking.

The live music is excellent although the actual tunes are not that hummable – but lovely nonetheless. Acting was fine, not professional performers so there was a bit of a mix but if anything it made it more real and honest. The simple staging of having everyone on all the time worked really well.

There were quite a few tears in the audience at the end, always a sign of a good show! The ending was not what I was expecting, which was good, but all the same nothing new.

Nicely done overall and great to see an Irish musical at the Fringe!
