Tommy Tiernan: Alive in Edinburgh 3***

| On 23, Aug 2015

Tommy Tiernan has been a great comedian for years winning the Perrier Award back in 1998 and has sell-out shows wherever he plays. I have seen him myself a number of times and always enjoyed the experience.

Returning to the Fringe after a few years away Tiernan has set himself a challenge of not preparing a show and free styling each night, not based on anything other than what comes into his head seconds before he says it. Brave stuff. And something that one might have guessed coming from him.

As the audience file into the sell-out debating hall in the half-light he is seen pacing back and forwards across the stage head down. Is the man nervous? Not him surely.

And then we are off. He starts talking, occasionally ranting, sometimes being the comedy genius he can be, at other times almost like he is having a breakdown. There is no point in mentioning subject matter as each show is unique.

Tiernan says this show is not for everyone, in fact he is not sure it is for him. Certainly some people did leave early, but the vast majority stayed till the bespoke end.
