Fat Rascal Theatre: Buzz: A New Musical, 4 stars ****

This award-winning show promises to guide us through the history of the vibrator and whilst it does indeed do that, it comes across more simply as a story about relationships. But it does this very well, it is very slick and professionally produced with an ideal set, excellent cast and the most costume changes I think I’ve ever seen on the Fringe.

It is billed as a musical but there are in truth only a few songs, it’s more a comedy with music rather than needing songs to advance any dialogue or plot. But it is very funny and, thankfully, I was not the only man there to enjoy it! The actors do a great job, delightfully slightly OTT with lots of drive and passion and very good comic timing.

The slick direction was excellent, lots of nice touches and I loved the blow up doll scene. Very good use of the set for the multiple scenes and polished performances.

Music came from tracks and was generally far too loud and bright – many lyrics got lost and as mentioned, there really wasn’t a need for the songs. All in all though a fun show executed really well by a talented, hard-working team.
