Sleepwalkers 4****

| On 22, Aug 2017

ThinkTwice Theatre have brought this new piece of drama to the fringe and I am so glad they did. The action takes place in pre WWII Berlin and 2020 England as three actors shift between the time zones, experiencing similar problems as economic crises, racism and an unstoppable surge of nationalism are threatening to break down both societies. Marta, Greta & Moritz work in a struggling bakery in Berlin where the cost of raw ingredients makes it almost impossible to keep the shop open; in 2020 Nathan’s cafe struggles in a disastrous political and economic climate where Jade offers to work for nothing and Amy’s cash and carry business cannot extend Nathan any further credit. Each time shift is almost balletic in it’s execution and as the crisis grows, the time shifts quicken when ultimately the characters speak to each other across the decades. Flora Thomson, Cara Withers and Alex Brit are terrific in their parts and I thoroughly enjoyed this ambitious piece of theatre. The message that we are sleepwalking towards another catastrophe was well made and I look forward to seeing them back on the Fringe in future years.
