Matt Price: Last Night a Weegie Saved My Life 4****

| On 08, Aug 2018

Matt Price greets his audience as they come in the door, seeming genuinely pleased to say hello to people – which is a lovely way to start a show. Matt doesn’t really do belly-laughs comedy (though the few times they come, they’re so worthwhile) but other equally worthy adjectives are ‘sweet’ and ‘charming’ – and ‘lovely’.

Matt tells stories – about himself this time – and there’s everything you’d expect from storytelling: pathos and humour and tension, call backs, patterns and rhythm. Matt’s probably one of the most non-judgemental comics on the Fringe, so his crowd work is something different. He seems to have an affection for his audience, so his interactions are never cruel, but always warmly and respectfully funny.

There’s a gently meandering sense to Matt’s comedy, which lulls the audience, so that when the payoff comes, it’s all the more for being unexpected. Technically, Matt is an excellent performer: good rapport with the audience, the show is well structured and coherent, and he’s funny too. An enjoyable hour in safe hands.
