Caitlin Cook: The Writing on the Stall 3***

| On 19, Aug 2022

We meet Ms Cook in the bathroom that is the show’s setting, and she sings us some songs about the graffiti she’s found. The opening could be a bit weird, but Ms Cook makes it work, and followed by some chat with us – the other people in the bathroom at the dive bar – to establish who we are and our role in the show, it’s all okay. She explains the premise of the show, and we’re off into the first song, sung by Ms Cook and accompanied on her acoustic guitar, with the ‘lyrics’ displayed on the screen so we can follow along.

The lyrics – of all the songs – are graffiti from bathroom walls. Ms Cook does a lovely job of curating these lines into coherent songs, and creating – along with the unknown graffitists – a genial hour of gentle comedy. The show’s as profound as bathroom philosophers can be, and Ms Cook links the individual witticisms together in pleasing and interesting ways. She’s an excellent performer with professionalism we only see because of some minor tech issues, (which aren’t permitted to derail the show) and a gentle manner in her audience interactions.

Ms Cook has also recorded her songs, so they’re available even if you can’t make the show.
