Chris Turner: Rap God 4.5****

| On 12, Aug 2022

Chris Turner is on the YouTubes, and if you’ve seen his videos, you might wonder how an hour might be filled. Surely whole show of freestyle raps would become a bit repetitive for any but the hardcore hip hop fans? Fear not. Mr Turner, former Oxford Imp and current performer-at-ease, delivers a stonking hour of freestyle and written wraps, general chat, and high-quality stand-up. He is very smart, but also has a bit of mischief and a taste for puns, so his stand up tends towards smart-but-terrible jokes, often followed by an air-horn, just to make the point.

Mr Turner is one of those performers who look entirely at home on stage, like it’s his second home or his own front room. He doesn’t stay on the stage, at times wandering around a roomy venue to interact with the audience, notably during an early freestyle which establishes his credentials and demonstrates his skills (which are impressive). His stand up is as good as the rapping, and combines decidedly low-brow topics with erudite, eloquent and sometimes black (or at least quite grey) commentary and humour. It’s well-crafted and structured. Each bit is individually and internally complete, but a few return in different forms to garner new layers and new funny.

You’re invited to contribute to the show while you’re waiting in the queue. These contributions, and an excellent performer, result in a highly entertaining and thoroughly fun show.

P.S. Mr Turner. I’m sorry about ‘worsted’.
