The Quality of Mercy: Concerning the Life and Crimes of Dr Harold Frederick Shipman 5***** - One4Review

The Quality of Mercy: Concerning the Life and Crimes of Dr Harold Frederick Shipman 5*****

| On 17, Aug 2023

Edwin Flay plays Dr Harold Shipman in this harrowing play, which he also wrote. The drama is set in his prison cell, with Shipman deciding to put his side of the story of his mass murders, after being labelled boring by Moors murderer Ian Brady. What follows is an unbelievable tale of a young man traumatised by his mother’s suffering, who decides that he will never let anyone suffer in the same way again. By studying medicine, he has the perfect start to his life’s plan.

From this altruistic beginning, Harold Shipman starts upon his deadly path of ‘easing’ patient’s suffering. As each victim passes away, their name appears on a screen behind Shipman, causing the audience to gasp at the horror of the sheer volume of names.

Edwin’s portrayal of Shipman is mesmerising. His deadpan face and voice terrify, as he coldly explains his methods and means of murder. At one point, he slowly plaits bandages as he calmly creates a noose, while carrying on with his tale. His confidence and complete belief in the validity of his actions, along with the cold dismissal of anyone who stood in his way, make this portrayal of a mass murderer unmissable. An extremely polished and disturbing performance that I urge everyone to see.
