Ellie MacPherson: Babe Lincoln 5***** - One4Review
one4review | On 19, Aug 2024
Ellie MacPherson—writer, performer, historian, and Abraham Lincoln enthusiast—makes a memorable entrance on stage, towering on stilts and sporting a top hat secured by a beard-like strap. Given her petite stature, Ellie was determined to give us the full Abraham Lincoln experience, capturing his towering presence.
Ellie’s incredible vocal talent and unique wit shine as she cleverly draws parallels between the past and present in a lively, humorous cabaret-style classroom. Accompanied by a pianist stationed in the corner of the stage, she skilfully weaves a diverse range of songs—such as “Boys Don’t Cry,” “Rock Star,” and “Milkshake” (in a poignant nod to Lincoln’s mother’s death from milk sickness)—into her history lesson.
Her deep research is evident as she shares both well-known and obscure facts about Lincoln, all while delivering a spot-on Kentucky accent that adds an extra layer of hilarity to her re-enactments of historical events. Throughout the show, Ellie engages the audience with ease, leading to a well-deserved standing ovation.
This is, without a doubt, one of the most entertaining history lessons I’ve ever had. I highly recommend experiencing it for yourself.
