Hold On To Your Butts – 5***** - One4Review

There is no denying the cultural impact of the original Jurassic Park, as titanic as any T-Rex. But the movie is so long, who has time to watch it again? We need a better solution. And that solution is provided by the appropriately named Recent Cutbacks who have fashioned a much more bite-sized version of the cinema classic, fresh from an apparently stellar run in New York.
Hold On To Your Butts uses only two performers, a selection of props and costumes cobbled together from household objects and one particularly talented foley artist to retell the whole of Jurassic Park, and it even comes in at an hour shorter.
Perhaps the most pertinent question for any show retelling a well-known film is “how well does it hold up if I’ve never seen it?” and fortunately, I have the answer. I have never seen Jurassic Park, or any of its increasingly baffling-looking sequels. Everything I know about it I’ve absorbed via cultural osmosis in the form of references, parodies and clips. However I can tell you that I loved this show. Even as someone not familiar with the original, the sheer levels of love and attention to detail put into the crafting of every dinosaur mime, acapella music score or slightly-dodgy Jeff Goldblum impression. The work of the Foley artist present was a particularly fun addition to the usual low-budget recreation formula, and was at times, just as fun to watch performing as the two actors.
A good see for anyone who just likes a few clean laughs (perfectly appropriate for kids to) and a must for any fans of the film.
