John Meagher: Big Year 4**** - One4Review
one4review | On 19, Aug 2024
John Meagher’s “Big Year” is a whirlwind of words and wit, delivered at a pace that leaves the audience exhausted, in the best possible way. With his non-stop Northern Irish accent, Meagher packs more words into an hour than most comics could ever imagine. His Fringe debut is a masterclass in storytelling, blending humour with poignant reflections on life’s complexities.
“Big year” doesn’t really sum up the show , as he takes us on a journey from his idyllic childhood on an Irish island to the turmoil of Belfast during the Troubles, before navigating adult life in England and a love affair with an Arab woman. It’s a tale of Anglo-Irish relations, class struggles, male emotions, and religion, all underpinned by Meagher’s sharp, often furious, comedic energy.
While the show’s intensity sometimes feels rushed, leaving his audience short of time to relish its more surreal moments, the relentless pace is part of its charm. “Big Year” is a tour de force of storytelling that delivers laughs and insight in equal measure,
Although this show could be re-titled “Fast & Furious” there are some charming moments surrounding the love of his life. He’s definitely a comedian on the rise and one to watch for the future. A very enjoyable show.
