SILENCE! The Musical – The Unauthorised Parody of The Silence of the Lambs 4****

| On 20, Aug 2024

The award winning Silence! The Musical finally comes to Edinburgh. Started life in 2005 at the New York International Fringe Festival and has had multiple productions in Chicago, London, and Off Broadway, gaining a loyal cult following

To the show itself, the sparse set at the Underbelly CowBarn and rain outside adds to the opening, where the leading song Silence sung by a talented flock of sheep (!!?), which will morph into multiple characters from the movie.
Like the film, the story is Clarence Starling, an FBI trainee is called to help interrogate incarcerate Hannibal “The Cannibal” Lector in the hope to catch very much active serial killer named Buffalo Bill.

What you get is professional parody and main set pieces of the movie with show stopping toe tapping tunes and choreography.
John and Al Kaplan’s music is a joy, particularly “I Can Smell Your C***”, “Are You About a Size 14?” And “Quid Pro Quo”.
The direction is sharp and they crammed in pretty much all the movie in the just over the hour time. Additionally, you do not need to have seen the film to get the most but it will certainly enhance the experience.

The cast is outstanding, particularly Mark Oxtoby as Lecter and Phoebe Panaretos as Clarice, but kudos goes to the ensemble cast members jumping to different characters, giving their own interpretations, and have their moment to shine when required.

So grab some fava beans, look up an old friend, and get out a nice Chianti to one of the best horror spoof musical since Re-Animator and The Evil Dead.
