The Smeds and The Smoos – 5*****

| On 12, Aug 2024

Soar into space with this Olivier Award-nominated adaptation of Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler’s popular book. Imagine Romeo and Juliet, but they’re aliens! On a distant planet, the Smeds, who are red, and the Smoos, who are blue, have always lived apart, thinking they must never mix, or so the older folks claim!

Meet Janet and Bill, two star-crossed lovers who met as children in the Wurpular Wood. They develop lifelong friendships, much to the annoyance of their grandparents, who insist that the two never mingle. However, when Janet and Bill fall in love and disappear into space, their families must put aside their differences and work together to find them.

The story is told through infectious songs and wonderful puppetry, transporting the audience on an exciting interplanetary voyage as the grandparents hunt from world to world. Along the journey, they find that being unique is not a bad thing, and that love truly conquers all things. This beautiful story of friendship and understanding is appropriate for children aged 3 and above.

The production is a remarkable demonstration of skill, with high production values, from the well-crafted puppetry and vivid set design to the lovely costumes and choreography. The performances are outstanding, with actors delivering each line and song with charm and pazazz, bringing the storybook world to life on stage.
