Will Shea, Won’t Shea 4**** - One4Review

Will Shea, Won’t Shea 4****

| On 12, Aug 2024

Will Shea, Won’t Shea is a really well written, directed and performed queer rom-com that lovingly parodies all the tropes rife in the best of them – falling in love with a best friend, road trip upended by a snowstorm, or blithely unrealistic job titles. It creates a show that you can enjoy simply as an updated and better take on the genre, or as a deeper exploration of what the tropes and narrative look like if the romance isn’t heterosexual.

It’s a one-woman play – Shea Stanley plays every character, and the narrator – but it’s extremely well performed and clearly directed, so there’s no confusion about who the characters are or about what’s happening. It’s tightly written, and! There are no plot holes (one of my minor peeves). It hits all the right beats, and has a great rhythm and pace. Shea’s performance – to a small audience – was stellar and convincing, with the energy and conviction sustained all the way through to a very satisfying ending.

This is lovely work. If you like rom-coms – or the friends-to-lovers trope, or even just a satisfying narrative – which include actually good comedy, try this one.
