For over 35 years, Edinburgh’s amateur musical group Allegro has showcased a wide range of productions, from popular classics to lesser-known gems. This year, they’ve taken on one of their boldest choices yet: SpongeBob SquarePants: The Musical.
For those unfamiliar with this cultural phenomenon, SpongeBob SquarePants began as a Nickelodeon cartoon series two decades ago and has since captivated audiences of all ages, evolving into a beloved franchise. Beyond the TV show, SpongeBob has inspired merchandise, films, soundtracks, and, in 2016, a musical that brings the quirky world of Bikini Bottom to the stage.
The plot follows SpongeBob and his friends as they try to save their underwater home, Bikini Bottom, from a volcanic eruption. With optimism, teamwork, and, of course, a song or two, SpongeBob, Patrick, and Sandy set out to save the day, facing obstacles from family, townspeople, and the villainous duo, Plankton and Karen.
In essence, the show is a delightful Cullen Skink of humour, catchy songs, and vibrant characters. It stays true to the spirit of the original show while adding hints of The Simpsons, Austin Powers, Shrek, and Toy Story for extra flavour. This solid foundation is only enhanced by Allegro’s exceptional execution.
A massive video wall spans almost the entire width of the stage, showcasing over 200 dynamic transitions that the cast, band, and lighting team interact with seamlessly. Allegro’s technical team pulls off what even professional companies might find challenging, making it look easy and natural.
The creative director duo, Dominic Lewis and Felicity Halfpenny, make brilliant use of the open stage, ensuring that it’s never cluttered with unnecessary bodies and keeping the show’s pace quick and lively. The choreography is outstanding, ingeniously drawing from the great musicals and giving it Allegro’s own spin.
Musical Director Louise Everett has assembled a young band tasked with playing original songs from artists like David Bowie, Cyndi Lauper, and Panic! at the Disco, and they sound like seasoned pros. This achievement is further supported by Sound Engineer Ian Cunningham, who brings out a perfectly balanced mix from both actors and musicians.
Finally, the cast delivers stellar performances. Joe Purcell (SpongeBob), Stuart Williamson (Patrick), and Coast Kinloch (Sandy) shine as the leads, embodying their roles with vibrant energy, vocal strength, and acting skill. Harrison Owens deserves special praise for his portrayal of Squidward, channeling the spirit of the legendary Paul Lynde (Google him kids) with remarkable comedic timing.
The supporting cast also excels, with standout performances from Russell Coid (Mr. Krabs), Rosie Surge (Pearl Krabs), and Robbie Nobble (Plankton). However, the Sardines nearly steal the show every time they’re on stage, proving that sometimes, less is more.
Congratulations to everyone involved—this is a performance packed with something for everyone and a truly entertain.
