Jacob Nussey: Primed – 3.5***

| On 18, Aug 2025

Jacob Nussey delivered a brilliantly dry and deadpan hour of stand-up, drawing from his experiences as an Amazon warehouse worker. A lad from Mansfield whose football dreams fizzled out, Jacob left school with minimal qualifications—describing it more as a leisure centre than a place of learning. After a brief stint at Sheffield Hallam University, he found himself at a crossroads, eventually landing a job at Amazon through a hilariously lax recruitment process.

His set is packed with sharp, understated wit. From strictly timed toilet breaks (two minutes—yet a Pot Noodle takes three!) to concern for the woman in the induction video (“is she ok?”), Jacob paints a bleakly funny picture of warehouse life. He jokes about seizing the opportunity to “gather some loot” during a power cut when the metal detectors were down.

Jacob explores cultural identity and confusion—being of Sri Lankan heritage but often mistaken for Albanian or Turkish, with the occasional “go back home” comment. His job interview stories are equally surreal, comparing one with EasyJet to Squid Game, and recalling an interviewer’s concern over the amount of vodka purchases on his Tesco Clubcard.

He touches on agency work and his awkward foray into middle-class life, including a visit to an STI clinic prompted by asparagus-induced pee panic – now a permanent note on his medical record. Amid the laughs, he makes a pointed observation about Amazon’s dominance: we use it not because it’s right, but because it’s convenient.

Jacob’s show is a clever, understated take on working-class life, identity, and the absurdities of modern employment.
