Mitch Benn – The Lehrer Effect 4.5 **** - One4Review
one4review | On 11, Aug 2025
Mitch Benn has been a stalwart of the Fringe for 30 years or so, and although I have seen him many times over the years, this years offering, showcasing to many the life and works of the late Tom Lehrer was a departure from most. But it worked. In Spades.
Benn discovered the great writer at an early age by chance and it was an instant delight. It heavily influenced his own career, something he parralels during the hour. There is a mixture oh Lehrer songs, some Benn adapted Lehrer song, and a number of Leher style of some of Benn’s vast back catalogue with Lehrer influences.
In between these numerous funny and clever numbers a potted history of both Tom and Mitch and their careers is neatly interwoven, delivered as only Benn can.
With the passing of Lehrer last month and the fact that all his material is now in the public domain, the timing for this show could not be more apt, even if it was written months before the sad event.
If you were a fan of Tom, or for that matter of Mitch, then this is a perfect blend. And if you are unaware of either or both comedy song writers this is the opportunity to become both and have a really enjoyable hour into the process.
