Whiteout is an interesting piece of dance theatre, exploring the possibilities and problems of inter-racial relationships. The choreographer, Natasha Gilmore, has based much of the story on her own experiences. Six dancers – 3 male, 3 female, explore mixed race relationships, from first glance to, in some cases, a painful end.

Staging is simple, but a large video screen is cleverly used to show both still and moving images, some of the choreographers own children. The dancers interact at times with the video images, adding an interesting layer to the story being told.

With original music by Luke Sutherland, which moves through many styles and influences, this is a sensory feast. The cultural backgrounds of the various players – Asian, African and Scottish, are highlighted by segments showing the very different dance styles of those countries. The choreography was complex and beautifully executed throughout. A mixture of classical ballet, contemporary, street and traditional dance gave the work a sense of light and shade. The dancers were able to convey real emotion, joy as well as sadness.

What could have been a tricky subject to tackle in less experienced hands, is ably handled by Gilmore and her talented dancers.
