Pippin - One4Review

The musical Pippin, music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz, is a particular favourite of mine and I try to take the opportunity to see it when I can.  Bradford High School Theatre Arts, Kenosha, Wisconsin bring it to Edinburgh as part of The American High School Theatre Festival. This young company are quite small compared with many, yet the ten actors and three musicians put on a great show.  There may not be any phenomenal voices in the company yet the enthusiasm and pure joy behind each performance shins through infecting the audience. The basic yet adaptable use of suitcases as the set and settings, make the changes of scenes fun. Minimal costumes and props also add to the appeal. Tyler Mitchell as the Leading Player and Garen McRoberts as Pippin lead the action from scene to scene, and Anthony Dare as Charles along with Eileen Haebig as Thea add extra comedy to the show. As usual Pippin’s grandmother Berthe (Alexa Hujik) threatens to steal the show and Amanda Johnstone’s Catherine is a pleasing love interest. Well worth seeing whether you know the musical or not. ***
