John Gordillo: Free Comedy - One4Review

Why should we pay for good comedy when we can get it for free? You might ask? Why indeed! If the quality of the rest of the Free Fringe is as high as the few shows we have managed to get to see we might be wondering whether it is worth paying the prices. I got to see John Gordillo at The Counting House and had an absolutely fantastic time. Yes I have seen John before but he was a small part of one of the line-ups at The Stand Comedy Club 18 months ago.We enjoyed him then, despite his resemblance to Hugh Grant (you poor man!) and hoped to see more of him in the future. Both Geoff and I were oblivious of his presence at this Fringe until they ran into each other in the Underbelly. I am so glad I took the time to go and see him he was fabulous. It might have been his penultimate performance for Fringe 2007 and his first full stand-up show in several years as he returns to comedy after a period producing and directing other peoples shows. His subjects are wide and varied and surprise surprise his thoughts fly off on tangents, frequently, he almost seems to argue with himself which way to go first. He laughs about belonging to various areas of the UK, accents, relationships, himself, Hugh Grant and life in general. I must be so memorable I became part of his show and it wasn’t till after he remembered "oh you’re Sheila of ‘Geoff and Sheila’, I remember now". Despite that we all had a great show, why he went away from stand-up I don’t know as this chap has a cheeky chirpy talent which could certainly commend more copious comedic capers. ****
