Me & Jezebel - One4Review

Katy Manning gives a remarkably sustained and powerful performance in the solo performance play ‘Me and Jezebel’. The ‘Me’ is authoress Elizabeth Fuller who relates the account of the time in 1985 when Bette Davis, aka ‘Jezebel’ the notoriously difficult actress, stayed in her home for just over a month. Her stay came about by complete chance and caused complete upheaval in the Fuller family home. Bette Davis was as famous for her off screen life as much as for her on screen career. Elizabeth Fuller had regarded Bette Davis as an idol since childhood and thus her stay was something of a dream come true. Aged 77, Ms Davis’ personality had not mellowed. She expected all those around her to dance to her attention. As well as the principals, Katy Manning takes on the other characters in the story including John Fuller, Elizabeth’s husband who became increasingly displeased with Ms Davis’ extended stay, and their 4 year old son, Christopher who began to take on some of the less attractive aspects of the Davis personality, for example the cursing. Eventually, she does leave and the play closes with a moving, final scene. An absorbing and humorous play enhanced by the complete skill of Katy Manning’s acting.   ****
