Sweeney Todd:  His Life, Times and Execution!  - One4Review

The story of Sweeney Todd is a tale I thought I was well aware of, or so I thought!! But, in this version devised by the company the story has a definitely different interpretation. The slant they have set the story too is a macabre, black comedy also using devices such as mime, slapstick, puppetry, shadow puppets all accompanied by live music. The cast of five, Frank Wurtzinger as Sweeney Todd, Lizzie Wort as Mrs Lovett and an ensemble of Conrad Sharp, Helen Taylor and Alfie Boyd play all roles and the live music as well in this 75 minute production. It is a well performed, directed and designed piece that holds the attention throughout, and although fairly early in both the Fringe day and run is already drawing big audiences into the  large Debating Hall space. Although done as a comedy, some of the effects are pretty gruesome up close some causing genuine groans of horror from the audience, however there is plenty of genuine laughter emulating also. So if you are looking for an innovative interpretation of the whole Demon of Fleet Street story, or even just some clever and imaginative theatre then this could well be the production for you.   ****
