4 stars ****

This show had huge production values – professional singers and musicians, all miced and very well designed.

However – it was all far too loud. So loud in fact that we lost some of the words due to the booming sound system. The singers were all excellent and in fact would have been perfect for the small space with no mics whatsoever.

Anyway to the show, a fairly standard love affair between people of two opposing cultures but done very well. The singing and acting were all of a high quality and very engaging. The music had some lovely melodies in it and this is where it gets slightly strange – there were live cello, violin, flute, clarinet, piano and tabla players (all of whom were excellent) and yet there was also a backing track. This track sometimes had the same instruments whilst the live players were sitting which made little sense to me.

This would work much better in a larger venue – given that, the small set was excellently designed and used, the simple lighting very effective and costuming excellent. An enjoyable production.
