Ingrid Oliver – Speech! 4****

| On 19, Aug 2017

Doing character based sketch comedy is in my opinion a two edged sword. Get it right and it is amazing. Get it wrong then carnage can and often does happen.
Ingrid Oliver has always been in the get it right camp and in her solo show she does so again.
From her bursting in as a character throwing up at the prospect of doing a TED talk, or with her internal monologue, as Tim Smith an impressionist tutor who is rubbish, as a Katie Hopkins style radio phone-in host, a German translator reacting to Farages’ nonsense, a student council leader and a LA girl on her mobile while driving, Ms Oliver has the vehicles to make serious points, and she does so, yet entertaining everyone with laughs along the way. And her characters, each one she creates and establishes them within seconds of their appearance.
Without a doubt there is strength in both the writing and the performance, occasionally injected with VT footage, is seamless. If there was anything I would like to see changed it would be a longer running time. It was one of the quickest hours for me in the Fringe this year.
