The B*easts 5*****

| On 05, Aug 2017

The venue for this enthralling play is the atmospheric Big Belly theatre, a large space underneath the arches of George IV Bridge. Despite the size of the venue there is never a loss of connection between the audience and Monica Dolan’s absorbing portrayal of Tess, a doctor involved in the case of a mother accused of child abuse. The play questions who is to blame – is it the mother, the father, society or social media as the mother’s and child’s lives unravel in terrible and inevitable ways. The narrative is interrupted throughout by calls from Tess’ own family which bring to light a personal tragedy which is painfully ironic.
Monica Dolan, who also wrote the play, is spellbinding as the doctor searching for answers and the play itself asks some very uncomfortable questions of our society today. This is an unmissable hour of theatre.
