University of Manchester Musical Theatre Society: Godspell, 4 stars ****

Godspell is one of those shows where, if you don’t know what is going on, you’re better off not wondering why people dressed in raincoats and wellies are singing to ‘Jesus’ and just sit back and enjoy the music! And very enjoyable this is.

With this interpretation of Godspell we have outstanding vocals from a high energy cast with never a dull moment on stage. Not a line or thought has been missed with excellent direction ensuring the show was always flowing. The opening ‘wellie’ scene was a bit confusing as to what this interpretation was trying to do but it soon settled into an enjoyable production. I’m not quite sure about adding bits of other material though (If I Were a Rich Man reference etc).

As mentioned, the singing was universally excellent with quite a bit of riffing – not something I usually like but done very well here and there wasn’t a weak cast member amongst them. Choreography was busy and the production colourful and well balanced in the sound department.

The small band did a great job although I missed some of the funkier piano bits. Nice to see them singing On the Willows as is meant, often that’s put on the cast to perform.

All in all an excellent production of Godspell and well worth catching.
