A word to describe Mr Lane would be ‘underappreciated’, and that word is not hyphenated. He’s got the perfect stage presence to match the kind of comedy he does (utterly self-confident; kinda kooky) and an eye for the silly and incongruous. His visual aids are exquisite works of comedic gold, and helpfully distributed to be used as fans in a hot venue. Also delightful is his use of the call-back because he doesn’t really do simple referencing, rather he reworks and expands to create material which is robust and funny in its own right.

The show is a mix of stand-up, elements of clown and those aforementioned visual aids, which migrate onto his body as well. Some of the stand up gets a little dark and you do wonder where exactly he’s going with it – up until then it’s been relatively innocuous – but he makes good and interesting points and uses that darker stuff as a set up for the finale.

Mr Lane seems like a lovely, relatively normal bloke – fist pumps on the way in, thank yous on the way out – but he’s got that glint in his eye that says just wait till I’m on stage, and when he is, it’s brilliant.
