Alexis Gay: Unprofessional 3*** - One4Review

Alexis Gay is a great presenter, and she probably would have been a good manager and quite successful in the corporate world, if it hadn’t been soul-destroying. It’s good for lots of reasons that she’s not still in that world, but also because we have another lovely comic at the Fringe. It did provide her with excellent material for this show, however.
The show is one of self-reflection and self-discovery, but Ms Gay presents that as a comedy show and not a therapy session. The show has a coherent narrative running through, and she makes use of a variety of styles and devices, so things both keep moving and don’t become monotonous. It’s extremely well crafted and everything in the show – from her movements around the stage to the AV to the music – is precisely choreographed and meticulously curated. But I do wonder if the high production values haven’t stifled the show’s sparkle and spontaneity, just a little bit.
Ms Gay herself is a great performer – bouncy, engaging, warm, empathetic – and she delivers this engaging and energetic show with conviction and warmth.
