Jenny Bede: The First Pregnant Woman in the World 4.5****

| On 17, Aug 2022

Ms Bede bounces on to the stage in a voluminous dress to which she makes no reference and performs the first of many astute and pithy songs on and around the subjects of pregnancy, birth, and being a mum. She is, don’t you know, the first woman to have ever had such an experience, so she’s here to educate. There was at least one mum in the audience, snorting in identification with Ms Bede’s experience; but you don’t need to be a mum to enjoy the show, or to find something in common. Ms Bede manages to talk about things in such a way that it’s likely most people will find themselves somewhere in the show, even if only under the weighted blanket.

Ms Bede’s comedy draws on her own experiences, and it is both self-aware and self-deprecating, while also fully embracing who she is, whether that’s a hormone-fuelled self-righteous buggy driver or a new mum having a bit of a day. Her spoken comedy and her songs are well balanced throughout the show, neither feeling likely they’re only there to support the other. Her songs are wonderful, with lyrics that bring something new and witty with each and every line, and convey emotions without being maudlin or saccharine.

This is a well-formed and performed hour from a honest and engaging performer.
