Being tucked into a very hot room, in the back of a busy pub, with noise spillage from outside the performance area cannot be the easiest experience, but maybe it is the most affordable way for unrepresented acts to take part. It probably harks back to the Fringe’s beginnings.
Lorraine Hoodless has this to contend with but she easily overcame any distractions and delivered the 2024 show in her usual easy-going and in a very competent way.
Lorraine interacts well with the audience, explaining, the acronym, asked about similar ones, linking crowd work with the theme of the show, gliding smoothly from one topic to another effortlessly, finding the funny wherever she goes. She is often self-deprecating, pokes fun at her partner also, there is chat about life decisions, holidays, flying, subliminal advertising, past relationships, weight watchers, espresso martinis, pets and what the future holds, and much more. This gives Lorraine plenty of scope for her fertile imagination, funny, clever writing and endearing persona to keep her audience well entertained.
The material was funny, okay maybe this audience didn’t go too much with belly laughs but I can’t think that anyone would have not had an enjoyable hour in the company of this enthusiastic comedian who surely deserves to be seen.
As part of the PBH Free Fringe this is free entry gig. However contributions either cash or card are sought at the conclusion. After all she has to maintain the D I of her title doesn’t she?
