Puppet Grinder Cabaret - One4Review

There is one thing for certain. Most of the puppets in this show will never feature on children’s TV. Be warned, the style of humour is anarchic and adult. Holding the show together is compere and comedian, Dave Gibson, who does little routines before introducing the acts. The opening act is the Shitty Deal Puppet Theatre whose leader Mr Doper, helped by an assortment of characters, rattles through twenty centuries of British history in about 10 minutes. This is a solid comedy start. The closing act is Suitcase Circus who present two of their acts, a rope walking driving glove and a Mexican illusionist hat. This is life and death drama. As well as puppets there are several animations. Suck-a- Thumb is a silhouette form of animation horror, whilst Worm Songs is of a much gentler nature. A clever routine is Dave Gibson talking to an animation character called Little Dave, who is really himself. This is one of the most unusual and curious shows on the Fringe. Some shows, such as this one, are very difficult to award stars. From my vantage point, I could see people in the audience who were perplexed but also those who were enjoying the whole experience. Personally, I found the variety of humour and art did produce absorbing entertainment despite the odd technical glitch.   ***
