Love Songs for a Timewaster - One4Review

3 Stars

***

The very full programme notes provide the background to this production of a play with songs. It is very much a work still in progress and a full version is expected to be completed in the autumn. This version has been tailored to suit a Fringe format.

Ian Heggie has written the script and lyrics. The music is by John Kielty, Christine Bovill and Tyler Collins. The story tells of the relationship between two men. Both men are enigmatic characters. The older man played by Iain Heggie lives a solitary life. His character also narrates the story. His approach to relationships is ‘commitment without commitment’. The younger man played by John Kielty, who also plays keyboard, has recently split up from his girlfriend. He discovers his bi-sexuality with the older man but will it last?

The songs sung by Iain Heggie are eloquent in construction and melancholic in tone. There is very definitely a preview, and thus a disjointed, feeling about the production.
