Live in the Staff Room (Sex, Fairy Tales, Serial Killers and Other Stuff) 3*** - One4Review

I wasn’t expecting this show to be as good as it was, given the venue (yet another sauna, this time, literally, the pub’s staff room). The show’s title says it all; it’s about sex (specifically porn), serial killers (specifically Giada’s fascination with them) and fairy tales (and how Disney has broken us). It has one overarching narrative line, which starts when Giada does and finishes when she says ‘the end’, and within which is contained lots of smaller stories of varying length. These smaller stories fall under the three main themes, but none of the material feels like it’s been crow-barred together or shoehorned in.
There’s lots in here, including a matter-of-fact presentation of political opinions and a refreshingly mature and rational discussion of porn. Giada is a very competent and confident performer, secure enough in her material to simply talk, without making a funny, without losing the audience (though it should be noted that there are some superb lines throughout the show). She also did an excellent job being her own front-of-house team – necessary since the show was full fifteen minutes before the advertised starting time.
